TRACK MEETS
The first official day of practice is on the last Monday in February. The last regular season meet is the last week of April followed immediately by our Championship Season during the first 2 weeks of May and the State Meet in the 3rd week of May.

How to prepare for meets:
  • UNIFORM, including team issued Jacket
  • Training shoes, socks
  • Spikes or flats
  • Water bottle & Snacks
  • DRESS WARMER than it looks.
  • Bring extra-- long sleeve & short sleeve shirt, sweatshirt
  • Blanket and pillow
  • SCHOOL WORK
  • Meets are LONG, so athletes should be prepared with: food, water, and clothing (for all types of weather).

Meet Rules & Expectations
  • CHSAA Rule: Cell phones, iPods, MP3 players, or other electronic devices are prohibited on the track and/or the field event areas during competitions according to CHSAA rules. We also cannot be responsible for any valuables brought to practice or to meets, so please leave all valuables at home!
  • No food or drink (other than water) should be taken on the infield of any track.
  • Parents/Spectators should NOT be on the infield of any track. Athletes should not be on the infield unless they are warming up for an event or competing (NO camping out or lounging on the infield).
  • Athletes should be respectful toward officials and other teams (please refrain from using inappropriate language).
  • School-issued uniform/team jacket + all-black pant MUST be worn during the entire meet, including the bus ride to the meet. PRIDE! The warm-up will consist of the team issued (or purchased) Red BHS Track Jacket and black pants. Pants should be solid black, but may have some striping.
  • Home Meets:  All athletes are expected to attend our home meets to either participate or assist: Mercury Invite and Final Dash. Athletes will stay for clean-up and a team meeting after the conclusion of the meet.
  • Athletes will be expected to stay at meets until the last event is contested. TEAM FIRST ATTITUDE! Every athlete matters, including those in the last event!

Meet Participation
  • Per CHSAA rules, athletes are only allowed to compete in 12 meets per season.  If an athlete starts a meet, that will count as one.
  • Athletes may not participate in Track & Field practices or competitions outside of BHS Athletics without the correct CHSAA documentation--see coach for details.
  • All athletes must have 3 practices before competing in their first meet.
  • All athletes must be passing 5 or more classes (2 D's = F) when eligibility is checked on Thursday. If they are considered ineligible, they cannot compete Monday through Saturday the following week.
  • Athletes will usually only be asked to participate in one meet per week.
  • Athletes who miss any classes on the same day as a meet are NOT eligible to participate in the meet that day, whether it's excused or unexcused (school sponsored events are exempt).
  • BHS Policy: Athletes who have ANY unexcused absences during the week leading up to a meet will not be allowed to compete.
  • We scheduled two meets every week, so athletes will be able to compete at least once per week.
  • Championship Meets
Leagues  (Front Range League) There will be a JV and Varsity League Championship; therefore, all athletes will have a chance to compete at a Championship level.
State The top 18 ranked athletes from the 5A classification in each event will continue to State Finals. See MaxPreps for updated rankings, which change every week.

Event Entries
  • Event entries are chosen based on the Top Ten list, with most athletes participating in 2-3 events per meet.
  • We are typically allowed only 3 entries per event each meet (keep this in mind when looking at Top Ten List).
  • Athletes compete in events for the TEAM--not for their individual pleasure/advancement.
  • Relays are made up of the top 4 available athletes. That means if the #1 and #3 athletes are not available (too many events, too much volume, too close to another event, etc) then #2, #4, #5, #6 will make up the relay.
  • Athletes will not always be entered in their favorite events, especially if it is a high-demand event.

Meet Times
  • Invitational Meets usually last 5-8 hours, depending on the size of the meet (more schools = longer meet).
  • Mid-week meets usually last until 7pm
  • Friday meets can last up to 9pm
  • Saturday meets start early

Traveling & Transportation
  • Away Meets: Some meets are "stay until the last event is contested" and some are "leave after you've done a cooldown from your last event".  This will be posted for every meet.  (**See Below for information regarding modes of transportation when athletes do not ride the bus.)
  • Parents/Guardians may take their athlete(s) home (after the team mtg at the end of a meet when required to stay for whole meet) OR (after a proper cool down after athlete's last event). Parents/Guardians but may not take other athletes unless it has been pre-arranged through paperwork (in the the athletic office) NLT 24 hours before the meet. Phone calls/emails will not be accepted.
  • When an athlete rides the bus to a meet--a parent/guardian MUST physically check the athlete out with a coach before departing the meet.
  • The bus will leave from Ron Cox Rd in front of the southwest gate (snack bar). Our departure time allows time for travel to the meet and no less than one hour before the first event.
  • It is District Policy to provide transportation Tue - Fri (No Saturday transportation will be guaranteed). If a meet is less than 20 miles from BHS, there will be a drop-only service (parents will need to pick up athletes at the conclusion of the meet).   We have several meets in both Cross Country and Track where transportation is not provided or is only provided one way.
FOR SAFETY & LEGAL PURPOSES, Coaches cannot arrange transportation when we do not provide a bus. Please see the schedule for days that may happen.  We will communicate this with the athletes when we go over the week's schedule, but it is the parent’s responsibility to check the schedule on the website and ensure their athlete has transportation.

Regarding transportation in the instance that transportation is not provided or is communicated that athletes are not required to take the bus: it is the responsibility of the student and their guardian to determine the mode of transportation
. While there is no explicit policy prohibiting athletes from driving themselves or riding with others, this decision lies with the student and their guardian.

While it is emphasized that athletes should not ride with another athlete unless both sets of parents/guardians are informed, this is not something we actively monitor and enforce. Please have a conversation with your athlete about your rules regarding transportation.
